Sod Care & Maintenance Tips

  • How Soon Should the Sod Take Root?

Your new sod should take root within 10 days of installation. Sod that is installed in shaded areas, may need more time, but proper watering will help these areas connect quicker. We do recommend that you install palmetto if you are in a shaded area.

  • Tips to Care for Your Sod After Laying.

We cannot stress the proper watering program too much. Please, ask us if you still have concerns after reading the other FAQs.

Stay off your new sod for at least 14 days.

Mow after two weeks with your mower set at the highest cutting height to reduce scalping.  Never mow off more than 1/3 the height of the grass.  If you have planted the sod in the shade, mow it very little and let it grow taller than the rest of your lawn so that it can get as much sunlight as possible.

Fertilize your sod three times per year. Spring, Summer, Fall

Control your pets.  Urine spots and “foot printing” on soft, soggy sod may cause permanent problems.

  • The Importance of Laying and Watering Sod Immediately!

It is vital to install your sod the same day that it is received. It is perishable, and the longer that it sits on the pallet the frailer it gets. Once successfully installed, water the new sod immediately, ensuring that the soil beneath is completely drenched. You will need to do this for the first week. At least 2 hours of watering time a day (1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening), without standing pools forming, is essential in the first 2 weeks (weather permitting).

  • How Much Do I Need to Water My Grass After I Lay It?

A safe rule of thumb is to water your grass every day for about two weeks. Then, you should water it three days a week for the next few weeks. You do not want puddles to form but you do want to make sure to water the entire installed area.

  • Can You Over Water Grass?

Put simply, yes, you can over water your grass. If you notice standing pools or still water in your lawn, then you have over watered. During the heat of the day, these puddles of water do not allow your grass to breath and it will begin to wilt. As the grass weakens it will become prone to diseases.
